Medical Wire - Spools are a pretty big (and small) Deal!

Stainless steel medical wire is a marvel of modern manufacturing -- diameters smaller than a human hair (1/4 of the size in some instances!) used in catheters and guide wires that save lives every day. It takes a skilled operator and the latest in technological innovation to make this material to the exacting standards of today's peripheral vascular intervention device manufacturers.

And all of this advancement and capability is lost if it isn't shipped to the customer in the package and condition that they require. In other words, the spools used are often an afterthought but they can be critical to the product and the manufacturing process.

For example: if a customer is creating catheters with a braided flat or round wire structure inside the tubing, they'll need material on a bobbin that fits into the machine they're using. Some example include Steeger, Wardwell, and New England Bobbins. If the application calls for coiling wire around a mandrel, the package will need to be a larger spool, that can hold multiple pounds and handle the added tension that small wires will place on the drum and flange. If the wrong spool is chosen in either of these applications, the wire could simply not fit on the intended machine, or even worse, could break during manufacturing -- causing a blow out or worse!

When ordering your stainless steel medical wire, it's important advise what type of spool you would like the product shipped on. You can see a variety of packaging options on our website, or you could simply call the Loos & Company Medical Technologies Division and discuss it with our sales department.

Innovation Drives Us: A look into Loos and Company Medical Technologies Division

Innovation Drives Us: A look into Loos and Company Medical Technologies Division

Loos and Company was built on innovation – it’s in our nature. With the creation of the Medical Technologies Division, our mission is to manufacture the highest quality strand, cable, and wire specifically for the medical industry. We are focused on quality and performance above all and we continue to innovate and improve our products and processes.

Last fall, we announced our ability to draw wire as fine as .001”. As you can imagine, drawing wire this fine came with its own unique set of challenges, but with each challenge, our team rose to the occasion. We are now able to package this fine wire on anything from a 30mm Steeger Bobbin to a DIN100 spool (dependent upon the diameter and quantity of course). But the innovation didn’t stop there.

In March, we announced that we obtained ourISO13485 certification. This meant going through a rigorous process of evaluating our internal tools and processes to determine whether they were compliant with ISO 13485 standards. Establishing a strong quality system was vital to our growing business and we are happy to say we emerged a better organization because of it. But the innovation didn’t stop there.

Since March, we have made the commitment to purchase additional cleaning equipment. Through the purchase of in-line cleaners, we will be able to deliver the cleanest products available in the market. We have also started multiple R&D projects to look at the possibility of expanding our product line as well as our available alloys. With these newest additions to our medical facility, we will continue to exceed our customers’ expectations.

All of these innovations will be on display in our booth, 2515, at MD&M Minneapolis September 21-22. Stop by and see us to learn more or download the catalog to learn more today. Or contact us today and we will get back to you ASAP.

We are now ISO 13485 Certified!

How Loos and Company can play a role in Minimally Invasive Surgeries

The growing advancements in medical devices have allowed for many conventional procedures to be replaced with minimally invasive surgeries (MIS). MIS allow skillful surgeons the ability to operate with less injury to body resulting in quicker recovery times, shorter hospitalizations, less pain, and improved cosmetic results. In these state-of-the-art surgeries, it is customary for sophisticated medical devices, or even robotic machinery, to be used to assist the surgeon.

When a surgeon is performing an MIS, they are likely to make several small incisions that effectively reduce overall tissue damage. Once the incision is made, a miniature camera is placed through a trocar allowing the surgical team an improved, magnified visual of the procedure on a monitor. Then, highly specialized endoscopes and specialty tools are inserted to perform the actual procedure. This is where Loos and Company Medical Technologies Division comes into play.

We manufacture the highest quality medical wire and endoscopic cables right here in our facility in Pomfret, CT. Loos and Company Medical Technologies Division can make cables in a variety of constructions and sizes to match the requirements of the device used or the procedure being performed.

The strength and flexibility provided by Loos’ stranded medical cables gives surgeons the precision and flexibility needed in these, and many other medical procedures. With sizes ranging from .006” up to .047”, we can meet just about any size requirement you may have. In addition to a wide range of sizes, Loos and Company can manufacture wire or cable in many different materials.

Before undergoing any surgical procedure, it is very common patients to research the surgeon, the facility, and even the side effects of said procedure. However, what they may not consider are the tools the surgeon may be using in the Operating Room. We are dedicated to easing every patient concern through ensuring the highest quality of our products.

If you have an application where you think our medical grade cable or wire could be used, please contact us or submit an inquiry. We are able to send sample material so that you can see the quality of our work before you place the order.

Why you should buy Loos and Company Medical Technologies Division wire

Loos and Company is no stranger to stainless steel wire. In fact, we have been selling it for over 50 years! We manufacture wire for some of the world’s most critical applications and we understand what it takes to meet the requirements of medical grade performance.

Loos and Company Medical Technologies Division specializes in stainless steel and nickel alloy round wire. We maintain a robust stocking program of medical grade wire in order to ensure short lead times. Some of our standard alloys include:

302
304V
316LVM
• 321
• MP35N

*Additional alloys are available upon request. Please see our alloys page for more information

Our wire drawing process begins with only the highest quality medical grade rod, which is then drawn to size on our dedicated medical equipment. We have experience drawing wire in sizes ranging from .0015” through .120”. Loos and Company Medical Technologies Division is able to meet any tensile, temper, or surface finish requirements you may have.

The Benefits of Loos and Company’s Medical Extrusion Core Wire

Loos and Company Medical Technologies Division manufactures ELASTICORE® medical extrusion core wire as a replacement for the copper and clad copper products currently available to medical tubing extruders. ELASTICORE® will help reduce the cost of R&D and production by reducing minimum purchase requirements, decreasing lead times, and eliminating the potential for clad material contamination in both the braiding/coiling operations and the extrusion process.

ELASTICORE® wire can help you achieve a reduction in overall cost. Silver clad and tin clad copper tends to be more expensive than the stainless steel our ELASTICORE® wire is made out of. We can provide small minimum runs of material, even for custom sizes! It has been our experience that the reductions in R&D costs have been a huge added benefit for our customers and make Loos and Company stand out from the competition.

Our customers find that buying their core wire through Loos and Company reduces their lead time. With over 50 years of experience in the wire manufacturing industry, we have developed a robust stocking program in order to keep a large inventory. It is our commitment to you to make sure we have a wide range of sizes and materials in stock to turn your order around as quickly as possible, decreasing production time for custom sizes.

ELASTICORE® is proven to eliminate the potential of contamination, which is common with silver clad or tin clad copper. Being composed of two separate metals, silver and copper or tin and copper, bi-metallics increase the potential of flaking. Flaking leads to debris within the tubing and damaged equipment or tooling. As stainless steel is a solid material, we have found that ELASTICORE® eliminates any potential for flaking.

ELASTICORE® is available in various diameters ranging from 0.006” to 0.100” in either a bright or matte finish. In addition, our core wire has an elongation profile that exceeds 30% and deforms similar to copper.

If our ELASTICORE® product sounds like it could meet the needs of your application, please contact us today and we will work with you to get you the exact product you are looking for.
